Flatbed and Film Scanners
These scanners do not have an automatic document feeder and are designed primarily for scanning single pages, books, photos and pictures. Typically these are connected to a PC (and in some cases a Mac) and the PC saves the scans as an image file or even in PDF format.
Some flatbed scanners have a backlight in the lid and allow you to scan 35mm film negatives, slides and even medium format film. 35mm Film Only scanners only do film strips and cannot be used for paper, photos or pictures.
Selecting the right flatbed and film scanner depends upon the type and size of the image or document you plan to scan and whether you will scan film negatives. Another important consideration is the optical resolution of the scanner measured in dots per inch (DPI). Most flatbed scanners are optimised for graphics and have higher resolutions than document scanners. If you plan to scan A4 documents you are better to consider an A4 Document scanner some of which include a flatbed capability.
